If you are setting up a play area for your child in your backyard, such as a swing set, then you probably want to make it as safe as possible. Many people use play sand, which can be a decent option, but there is a better choice out there. Instead of buying play sand for your little one's play area, consider opting for rubber mulch instead. These are a few key reasons why you may want to look into this option.
1. It Helps Cushion Falls
When your child is running and playing, there is always the chance that he or she could slip or fall. Your little one could also fall off of the swing set or otherwise get injured. Sand won't cushion the fall as well as rubber mulch will, so this mulch can be a great option if you want to help prevent injuries while your little one and his or her friends are playing. Make sure that for any equipment over 8 feet tall, you use a mulch depth of at least 12 inches.
2. It Won't Get in Your Child's Eyes
Sand can obviously blow around when the wind picks up, which can cause it to get in your child's eyes. It can also accidentally be flung around when your child and his or her friends are running around or playing in the sand. You probably want to protect your child from this, and luckily, you can if you opt for rubber mulch instead. It won't get in your child's eyes, so you can help prevent discomfort and eye injuries.
3. It's Longer-Lasting
As a parent, you probably don't have a lot of time to spend on maintaining the play sand in your child's play area. However, sand can blow around and wash away over time, which can leave the area bare. Luckily, this isn't the case with rubber mulch. Rubber mulch is heavier, so it's much less likely to blow or wash away. This means that it can last for a lot longer, so you don't have to worry about replacing it all the time. Not only can this save you time as a busy parent, but it can save you money as well.
If you have been thinking about purchasing sand for your child's play area, you may want to consider rubber mulch instead. You can purchase it from a local recycling company that has a tire shredding machine or from a home improvement store manufacturer.
